Matchup: Empire vs Bretonnia, Linked battle part1/2 “Invasion”
“The first of our battles in this linked campaign was the Invasion scenario. We decided that the Bretonnians were to be the invaders and attackers. Both the Invasion and Siege battles were to be played using 3000 points armies. There are no restrictions on characters and items/spells.
There was some uncertainty concerning the rules for assaulting towers using cavalry and monsters, but as we got the answers we needed the game moved on and the battle went its course.”
Deployment:
This scenario has one single objective, and that is to run down and destroy the enemy. The Bretonnians waste no time, and charge in. The first target is the beacon tower, being held by a unit of Greatswords, accompanied by two wizards and a bounty hunter. As it is not easy for mounted troops to assault a tower, the tower holds out, and will prove impossible to raid. After losing several Knights Errants and also seeing the King struggling to get a foothold, losing his mount in the process.
As the Errants decide the attack on the tower will prove futile, they abandon their charge and start marching up the southern edge of the board, galloping through the ruins of the ancient castle.
At the same time, the Pegasus knights charge up the northern edge, having set their sights on the war machine battery, backed up by a unit of mounted yeomen.
Not realizing the danger, the Empire units hold their position, waiting for the opportune moment to make their move. But that moment never arises, instead the Bretonnians take the Empire forces by surprise. They charge through the ruins, laying waste to the handgunners, overrunning and flanking the knights orderly. The demigryph knights are suddenly outmaneuvered, and unable to assist the knights.
At the same time the Pegasus knights destroy the war machines after giving up the yeomen and two Pegasus knights, giving the Bretonnians complete control of the northern flank. The Empire forces make and desperate attempt to save the village and the Grand Master leaves his unit and charges to the rescue of the master engineer and the stronghold across the bridge. It is too little too late. The engineer is lost, along with the knights trying to flee across the bridge and into the village. By holding the third stronghold, the Grand master unknowingly makes the difference, as the both the Empire and the Bretonnians each hold two points worth of either quarters or strongholds, so the battle ends a tie.
But the Bretonnians feel they have the upper hand, and the King decides to moves his forces further into the Old World, constantly pushing north. The next step in King Louen’s plan is the Fortress of Rattennest………
