Matchup: Empire vs Bretonnia, Linked battle part 2/2 “Siege”
“This was to be the second round of our linked campaign, and it would feature the Siege version of the game. The rules are still the same, no comp of any kind, and free use of characters in a 3000 points army. We could not find any clear ruling on how to handle close combat resolution on top of the fortress section, so we wentt with our own “house rules” for the evening.”
Deployment:
This scenario is also a clear cut case of all-out attack. What makes the siege games special is the pre battle phase; The Bretonnian, led by their king, had reached the outskirts of the Fortress Rattennest, and set camp. While the attackers constructed their siege engines, the Empire forces were busy preparing for the oncoming siege in their own way, by blessing their towers and walls, and conserving food the best way they knew have. The Bretonnians siege lasted for almost a month before the strike came. The long wait took its toll on the fortress dwellers, as starvation killed almost ¼ of the forces. As the siege strike started, the Bretonnians were able to breach a vital part of the fortress, namely the gateway. This precise shot from the trebuchet would later on prove to be the difference between defeat and victory. The first assault saw the siege towers crash into the southern and eastern tower, and the men-at-arms pouring onto the fortress walls.
The king himself launched his attack on the gateway, but was denied in his first attempt to capture it, and open the gate. The Greatswords holding the eastern tower had little trouble defeating and turning the men-at-arms away, also capturing the siege tower in the process. The handgunners on the wall used their flaming ammunition to lay waste to the other siege tower, but after the Bretonnian infantry had arrived on the ramparts.
At this moment the king made yet another attempt to capture the gate, and this time he succeeded, and the Old worlders could now only hope that their Emperor would arriving very soon to relieve them from this certain death. But once again the Empire had been too hesitant with its maneuvers, and the relief force came too late. No force could stop the mounted king from slaying everything in his path to open the gate and capture the middle tower, and backed up by his infantry, victory was imminent. Even though The Emperor came, along with the mighty Demigryphs, but too late, and only to see the fortress fall and King Louen triumph again.
Victory points: 2 – 1 Brets win on victory points by 300+ points, end of 3rd round
