The adventurers meet on a coach heading for Marienburg. Their final destination is Altdorf, to join Prince Hergard von Tasseninck of the Grand Principality of Ostland on an expedition to the gray mountains. They have to change coaches to get to Altdor so they are let off at The Coach and Horse inn, beside the main road to Altdorf.
At the inn they engage in high stakes gambling with a Bretonian called Philippe Descartes. Pieter Knopp accuses Philippe of cheating and a fight almost breaks out. The Bretonian is deeply offended and spends the rest of the night insulting Pieter. Pieter manages to keep his cool, and the party retires for the night.
The next morning the coach leaves for Altodorf, since the coachmen are extremely hung over Pieter offers his help to drive the coach. After about two hours the coach slows down to investigate a human figure hunched over in the middle of the road. As they get closer a human figure with ooze pouring out its eyes and rotting flesh turns around and attacks the coach. The horses panic and pull away from the coach with one of the coachmen being pulled along with it. The figure rushing towards Pieter looks very familiar to him; it is his old mercenary companion Rolf Hurais from Delberz.
A fight breaks out, as Pieter and Mordin attacks the mutant. After a brief battle the mutant is slain. Some of the passengers help the injured coachman and some help getting the horses back. At this point a bestial cry rends the air from further round the corner. The adventurers sneak through the forest to investigate. They come upon a ghastly scene. An overturned coach lies across the road, with two of its horses desperately trying to struggle free, a creature with a large body and an incredibly small head is hacking maniacally at them with an axe. Three more mutants are also at the scene, one heavily wounded. Pieter, with the element of surprise fires off four crossbow bolts and misses with all shots, Walter draws power from the winds of magic and miscasts 4 spells. At this point the mutants notice the party and charge them. A massive fight breaks out. The Troll slayer saves the day by rushing the mutant with the crossbow and clobbering him so hard he splits in two. Pieter and Walter almost die, but with the aid of magic and healing draughts they get back on their feet.
Examining the grizzly scene the adventurers find a man with two crossbow bolts in his back. Upon examining the body the adventurers are in for a shock, because he looks exactly like Walter. Protruding from his jacket pocket is a blood-stained letter that explains how he is the sole beneficiary of a substantial inheritance. Off course the party plot to get the estate and money for themselves.
The man also has papers on him that identify him as one Kastor Lieberung.
At this point, five road wardens show up to investigate what has happened. After some discussion, the wardens are satisfied that the adventurers did not break any laws and offer to escort them to the nearest inn. They arrive at the Seven Spokes inn, and retire for the night. The next day they continue the journey to Altdor.
Arriving in Altdorf at the Königplatz (Kingssquare) the adventurers are approached by two Altdorfers franticly tugging their noses and fiddling with their ears trying to signal Walter. This is repeated a number of times, each more pronounced than the last. The two men looking more perturbed at Walters lack of response. After a while the two men expressions suddenly change to ones of relief, and they hurry over to where a stocky man stands near a doorway to a house. They follow him through the door which quickly shuts behind them.
While exploring Altdorf, Pieter runs in to an old friend named Josef. He is a boat man, making his living on the river Reik. He invites them to join him for drinks at the Boatman inn. During the evening he explains that he is selling a big shipment of wine to Schaffenfest in Bøgenhafen, and asks if the adventurers want to help him as shipmates and security.
While the party is discussing fees and length of employment the door flies open, and a tall gaunt character with aquiline features and a deep scar along his left cheek enters the inn. He sits down in a dark corner snarling as he passes by.
A short while later two young nobles and their four gorilla-like bodyguards enter the inn. They start a drinking competition, and after a while one of them throws up on the dwarf. As the nobles laugh the party takes action. At this point the tall and gaunt with the scar comes over. He tries to knock out Mordin, but the dwarf’s new skullcap saves the day. At this point the wizard touches the attacker and sends him to sleep. The party now discusses what to do with the sleeping man, while the nobles leave the inn. They talk back and forth, but Pieter, having had enough off being pissed on, pulls out his dagger and cut the man`s throat. A silence comes over the inn as they pick up the body and throw it in the water outside. All being a bit stunned by this level of violence we end the session.
